The Car
The birth of the 9006 Racing ZL1 Camaro
Type of Racing
This car was purchased with the intention of racing in street and real street classes at land speed racing events, such as those hosted by ECTA, SCTA and at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speed Week. As the car and team evolve, these changes comply with ECTA and SCTA AA/BFALT land speed classes.
The racing style begins with a standing start. The goal is to achieve as much speed as possible over the course of a measured distance. Typically, 1/2, 1 or 1.5 miles. Airport runways are often the venue and pavement common. Other events offer courses of dirt and the grandaddy of all is the Salt Flats of Bonneville where the course is salt and up to 7 miles long.
Modifications & Upgrades
The Beginning
Team 9006 Racing Camaro is a 2014, 5th generation ZL1 Camaro. Purchased new in October 2013, the factory 580 hp, 6.2L supercharged LSA engine comes with ride control, a fully independent suspension, huge 15” Brembo 6 piston brakes. It is capable of reaching 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, 1/4 mile in 12 seconds @ 119 mph and a top speed of 184 mph.
In mid-winter of 2013-14, and with 907 miles on the odometer, the car was shipped to Lingenfelter Performance Engineering in Decatur, IN for a performance upgrade. This included:
- Bigger competition cam shaft
- Porting and polishing
- Reseating and installing with inconnel and hollow stem valves, springs and retainers
- Change head bolts and gaskets
- Change to 2.55″ supercharger pulley
- Install LS-9 solid supercharger isolator coupling

- Dyno testing at 1,170 hp on motor and 1,300 on nitrous. additional changes
- Increasing supercharger speed and nitrous jet size before the last 208.82 mph at the Arkansas Mile in April 2019
What’s Happening Today
Currently the chassis is undergoing major upgrades at Advanced Chassis in Antwerp, OH. These changes will help with strength, weight and safety. These changes include:
- Completely remove the OEM independent rear suspension and replace with a fabricated Strange, Ford 9″ rear housing
- 35 spline hollow drilled spindles
- 3.0 gear 3rd member, coil overs, 4 link suspension, driveline safety hoops
- Remove and replace the complete OEM front frame, firewall forward, steering and suspension, shock towers
- Install tubular K-member, fit all 4 wheels with spindles and disc brakes to accommodate 15″ super speedway wheels
- Roll cage upgrades to NHRA funny car drivers enclosure, plus frame stiffening and associated tubing to meet 25.5 standards
- Moving seat rearward, changing out the dash and steering column to accept a removable steering wheel
- Front and center solid mounts to accept a BBC engine (In February 2020, we bought this engine in new condition with a few 1/4 mile test passes on it.)
Once these changes are complete the chassis will be delivered to: Mid America Kustoms, Fort Wayne, IN. The to-do list will include installing the engine (listed below), and plumbing two turbo chargers, intercoolers and a new Holley EFI engine control.
